The Native Youth Olympics (NYO) is an annual statewide competition in Alaska that celebrates traditional Indigenous games rooted in the survival skills of Alaska Native peoples. Athletes compete in events such as the One-Foot High Kick, Seal Hop, and Stick Pull, which reflect skills once used for hunting, endurance, strength, and teamwork. The Senior NYO Games are typically held each spring in Anchorage and bring together hundreds of student-athletes from communities across Alaska. NYO is important because it helps preserve Alaska Native cultures and traditions, strengthens connections between youth and their heritage, and promotes leadership, sportsmanship, and community pride while honoring the knowledge and resilience of past generations. We were so glad to see our Tatitlek descendants attend and win a few awards!
