Copper Mountain Foundation recently hosted a two-day Qaspeq sewing class in Anchorage, February 4–5, led by Frozen Stitches’ owner and instructor, Emily Leon. The small, in-person class provided participants with the opportunity to create their own unique qaspeq while learning traditional sewing techniques.
Emily’s instruction followed the traditional Yup’ik teaching style of “watch first, then do,” allowing participants to observe each step before practicing with guided support. The class also honored traditional methods by working on the floor, where fabric is laid out for cutting and preparation. The workshop was structured into two extended sessions, each lasting five or more hours, and focused on three key phases of construction: cutting, prepping, and assembly.
